Dr. Peiwen Yu, President
Peiwen received her Ph.D. in Immunology/Pathobiological Sciences from the School of Veterinary Medicine University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her BS and MS in Animal Science form National Taiwan University. She has over 20 years of experience in biopharmaceutical industry and research, focusing on drug discovery and development in oncology and inflammation/immunology.
She is currently Senior Director of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology with Exelixis, Inc. since 2001; manages a team of 25 staffs; established and leads the Cell facility, Core assay team and Blood biomarker core; coordinates clinical and discovery research programs. Prior to joining Exelixis, she worked at Rigel, Inc. for 4 years after her post-doctoral research fellowships at Hoffman-La Roche. She is a member of ASH, AAI, and CABS. She also severed as a board director of TFGHAA-NC and lead the publication team in 2010-2011.
Dr. Julie Yang, Public Relations
Julie serves as Director, Intellectual Property, at FibroGen, Inc. Julie has 20 plus years of experience in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, previously in research and management, and over 10 years in IP management. Julie joined FibroGen from Limerick BioPharma, where she was is in charge of Limerick BioPharma’s intellectual property and manages company’s contracts as Senior Director of Intellectual Property. Prior to joining Limerick, Julie was responsible for Genelabs’ entire patent and trademark portfolios. Julie is very active in her community. She has volunteered in CBA for over 8 years. In addition, she also serves on the board of Leading Women in Technology.
Ms. Katherine Wang, Treasurer
Katherine Wang got her B.S. degree in Optics from Shandong University, and Ph.D. in Physics from Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY). She worked as research scientist in Neurodegenerative Diseases Center of University of Virginia. She has years of Hands-on experiences in optical engineering, DNA sequencing, protein purification, drug-protein interactions and cell culture. Professionally trained as physicist, later discovered that her real interest is in clinical data analysis.
Currently, she is a clinical SAS programmer at Gilead Sciences, doing data analysis in clinical trials: Phase 1 to 4. Prior to Gilead, she worked as certified advanced SAS programmer in Clinovo. Clinovo is a Bio-IT company focusing on meeting the needs of data management of Bio-Pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Katherine has been a volunteer of CBA in past two year as treasurer. Her diligent work and enthusiasm have been well recognized. She grew up in Wuhan, China and enjoys reading, writing, walking in nature and Scottish Country Dancing.
Mr. Cesar Ho, Publication
Mr. Cesar Ho is a senior staff at DG Architects, a medium-sized firm based in Mountain View that specializes in the design of high-tech projects for clients based in the Silicone Valley and beyond. It is in this capacity that he comes in contact with many of the leading biotech and pharmaceutical companies that have a presence in the Bay Area. A short list includes Merck, Roche, Abbott Labs, Genentech, Revance, Pacific Biosciences, and Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute. Prior to joining DGA, Cesar has worked for some of the largest architectural firms in the country such as SOM, HOK and Gensler. Besides the US, he has lived and worked in Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore, among other places. Cesar received his M. Arch degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, and his Bachelor degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Frank Lin, Web Developer & Alliance Development
Mr. Frank Lin is the Regional Sales Marketing Director at Specialdeals.com, a VC funded startup a deal-of-the-day website that features discounted gift certificates usable at local or national companies. Frank Lin is the Regional Marketing Director in US and General Manager in Asia Pacific at Matchbin, Inc, a Web 2.0 Content Management System (CMS) provider for newspaper/radio station/magazine industry. Prior to that, Mr. Lin was a Sales Operation / Marketing Specialist at VeriSilicon, a Fabless Semiconductor company.
Mr. Lin now is the Marketing Manager at GBC (www.gbc.com.tw). Mr. Lin received his B.A. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA from Santa Clara University.
Mr. Andrew Teng, VP & Alliance Development
Currently a Managing Director at Ecos Lab Co. Mr. Teng has more than 16 years of general management experience in the fields of semiconductor and Bio Science. His broad background includes P&L, operational, BD, product development, marketing, IP protection and M&A. Prior to joining Ecos Lab, Mr. Teng held a senior positions with Encepho Pharmaceutical as V.P. of Business Development. Mr. Teng has extensive international experience having had direct responsibility for business development and strategic planning in Greater China. Mr. Teng has a B.S. degree from San Jose State University
Dr. Patrick Yang, Relay for Life Committee
Dr. Patrick Yang currently is working at Portola Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He has been working in bay area for nine years as scientist/staff scientist in various pharmaceutical companies, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Nektar Therapeutics Inc. and Sunesis Pharmaceuticals Inc. Dr. Yang graduated from Nanjing University, and obtained his Ph. D. in pharmaceutical sciences from University of the Pacific, USA. He also has several years’ working experience in analytical field and management in China.
Dr. Yang’s research interests include analytical development, method transfer/validation, pre-formulation/formulation, and controlled release of drug. Additionally, he has previously served on CBA board from 2003 to 2005.
Dr. Son Kuan , VP & Annual Conference Chair
Dr. Son Kuan has been in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry for approximately 20 years. Her experience covers both early stage product development and quality control support to commercial products. She has consulted in areas of laboratory control, method transfer, method validation, and stability. Son is the Director of Quality Control at Alexza, and was the head of Quality Control at Zosano Pharma, Solstice Neurosciences, Elan Pharmaceuticals, and Anosys. Prior to those, she was a scientist at Matrix Pharmaceuticals, rpr Gencell, and Sugen. Son has built new Quality Control departments and improved the GMP compliance of existing Quality Control departments. She managed both in-house and contract laboratories testing, stability program, and environmental monitoring. Son has led the department successfully pass PAI from FDA and Health Canada, and GMP inspections from FDA, EMA, and CDC. She also assisted partners successfully file NDA in Japan and Korea. Son has a B.Sc degree in Biochemistry from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a Master degree in Nutrition from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. degree in Nutritional Biochemistry from Iowa State University. She received post-doctoral training in Endocrinology from University of Virginia.
Dr. Shih-Chen Chang , Publication
Dr. Shih-Chen Chang joined in Genentech as a senior epidemiologist in September 2011, he works in virology and transplant therapeutic area and supports the company to understand targeted patient population, drug utilization, prepare relevant report for regulatory submission, and design post-marketing studies to monitor safety signals using non-interventional approach through using observational data resource. Before joining in Genentech, he worked at AstraZeneca in Wilmington, Delaware as an associate director in global epidemiology under patient safety unit, where he focused on oncology and bacterial infection therapeutic area. Shih-Chen Chang also did his post-doctorate training at division of cancer epidemiology and genetics in national cancer institute, and obtained his PhD in school of public health, Johns Hopkins University. He has approximately 30 first and co-authored publications in peer-review journal. He also served as the board committee member in the alumni of National Taiwan University in greater Washington D.C. area in 2003-2004 and the board committee member and chair of the Chinese-American Network association in AstraZeneca in 2009-2011.
Dr. Kai Zheng , Membership
Dr. Kai Zheng received his Ph.D. from the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kansas. After graduation, he joined Genentech Oceanside site and focused on the protein formulation development at early stages. After working at Oceanside for 4 years, he moved to Genentech SSF site and joined the late stage pharmaceutical development department. He is working on Phase III and commercial formulation development now. When he was in Oceanside, he was a member of SABPA (Sino-American Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Professionals Association) and worked as meeting volunteers.
Dr. Shwu-Hwa Lin, Secretary
Shwu-Hwa Li received her Ph.D. Degree in Biophysical Science from University of Alabama at Birmingham and B.S. Degree in Chemistry from Tamkang University , Taiwan . She has her postdoctoral training in CURE UCLA and in Dept of human biological chemistry and Genetics in University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston . After postdoctoral training, Shwu-Hwa joined Exelixis, Inc as a senior scientist focusing on drug discovery in oncology and inflammation. She has years of hands-on experience in protein engineer, expression, purification, biochemical/biophysical characterizations and protein pre-formulation. Currently, Shwu-Hwa is working at Sutro Biopharma.
Dr. Min He, Registration & Publication
Min He received her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Purdue University. Her major interest was the application of LC/MS in macromolecule studies. Min started her career in the industry as a marketing specialist for Thermo Electron (now Thermo Fisher) in 2005, with a focus on ion trap mass spectrometers. In 2007, Min joined Theravance in South San Francisco as a Bioanalytical Scientist, where she worked on drug metabolites identification and quantitative bioanalysis using LC/MS approaches. Min currently holds a QC manager position for the Stability Program in Alexza Pharmaceutical Inc. She also monitors the leachable/extractable program in the QC department.
Mr. Shawn Cheng, Alliance Development
Mr. Shawn Cheng is an intellectual property attorney at Perkins Coie LLP, primarily focusing on patent strategy and prosecution. Mr. Cheng specializes in counseling clients in connection with legal issues associated with semiconductor, systems, Internet, mobile, and software technologies. Mr. Cheng is a member of the state bar in California. He is also registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office. He holds a Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and is a member of the Order of the Coif.
Mr. Cheng comes from an engineering and start-up background. He received his BS degree from UC Berkeley with honors in both Electrical Engineering & Computer Science and Material Science & Engineering with a minor in Bioengineering. He worked in the speaker recognition, navigation automation, and electronic design automation industries, as well as his own start-ups in enterprise web application and Internet applications.
